New stuff soon, maybe...?

Wed Aug 26, 2009, 10:11 AM
Yo!

I've got a few minutes on my lunch break to stop by the library and check in here after a lengthy absence... :happycry:

So, how is everyone? I've been busy with tech school and squad leader (yup!) responsibilities lately, and lacking a computer doesn't help much... but, I've still managed to get a few new illustrations done in my free time. One of my airmen said I could use his scanner if I need to, so... hopefully I'll be able to start posting more stuff soon!

Greetings!

I have discovered last night that, when one has gone for three months without the slightest taste of alcohol, going straight for the good stuff isn't the best idea in the world. I was quite surprised by how much of my tolerance I had lost, despite now being in the best shape I've been in years. Perhaps the 20 pounds I lost in Basic was my "alcohol absorption weight"? ^^;

I'm pleasantly surprised by how good the food here is. I've heard so much shit-talk about the Army food and how it compares to that of the other branches... and yet, I'm enjoying the Dining facilities here in the Presidio more than those of Lackland. Maybe it's just something specific to this base? Or perhaps it's just that Lackland's food seemed to have been worse due to being rushed through meals and yelled at by NCOs at the "Snake Pit"? I guess I'll find out how things are at a "real" Air Force base is when I get to Goodfellow or wherever I'm stationed afterward.

The city of Monterey is a blast. I've been able to get out into town and visit the Del Monte Center (the local mall), and absolutely loved it; it was good to be able to completely build up a new wardrobe (mostly at Hot Topic and Macy's... I was surprised to see such an expansive Men's department at the latter; I always thought they were about parade floats :D ).

It's wierd getting accustomed to how differently people look at me and act around me when I'm wearing the uniform... I certainly appreciate everyone's attention and respect, but at the same time... I'm not used to standing out so much. It almost feels like some sort of instant celebrity status, despite having not really even accomplished anything in the military aside from making it through BMT; I guess I just don't feel right having people be so generous toward me without having done anything yet to deserve it. I'm sure I'll get used to it, but at the same time, I don't want to get so used to it that I end up taking advantage of the kindness of others.

So far, I haven't had very many opportunities to draw anything too great; the sketchbooks they sell here on post have frustratingly rough paper which keeps the user from erasing effectively, grinds down pencils too quickly, and smudges worse than any other paper I've used before. Perhaps I'll order a Bristol pad, now that I have access to the interwebz, and possibly also see if I can have my folks send my scanner eventually. Or, I can buy myself a tablet PC and try out this whole newfangled "digital art" thing all the young'uns are so into nowadays? :lol:

Hello everyone!

I'm writing this now from an internet cafe in San Antonio, Texas; having just gotten my first Town Pass upon graduating from Basic (as well as enjoying my first cup of coffee in two months!)! At first, it felt like it was going to be a tremendously long 2 months here, but now I've got that feeling of "Oh holy crap it's almost over already?!" :lol:

It was a very challenging journey to go through (especially when one takes into consideration the recent toughening of standards for the USAF training, in order to get our Enlisted more up to par physically and emotionally with those of the other branches of the service... :happycry: ) , but was all worthwhile in the end. I've made a lot of good friends here whom I will definitely keep in contact with over the years, and as well I will recount some of the more interesting things that happened in BMT once I have more time to do so.

I've obviously not had any opportunities to draw anything in a while :lol: , however, once I get things rolling in Tech School I should be able to get back on track with all of that. :nod: And on the subject of Tech School, I'm still going to Monterey to be trained as a Linguist; however, the language I will be trained in shall be Russian instead of Japanese... the reason being that Japanese is no longer available for Enlisted (since it serves them little good to spend money training someone in such a low level of authority to be a translator for the language of an absolutely friendly nation... not that we've had any problems with Russia in 20 years or so, anyway... but, whatever.). But, I've also been interested in learning Russian for a long time as well, so it all works out in the end. And the great news is that the forward "deployment" (if it could even be called that, since there are no open hostilities whatsoever) bases that I would be sent to for the language assigned to me are in Germany and Japan, both of which I've been wanting to go to for as long as I can remember.

So, I'll definitely get many opportunities to travel the world and see new things, which is exactly why I joined the Air Force to begin with. So, from the mindset I had in the first two weeks of training, of "Shit, what am I doing here?!" to my current thoughts of "I somehow made it this far; now I've just got to keep pushing forward;" I've definitely become a much more optimistic and confident person for coming here.

Hello!

After a month or so with no internet (living with my folks again, so I wouldn't have to worry about final bills right before going off to Basic in a little over a week from now), I figured I'd hop in and say hello, as well as post a sketch I was working on.

I was quite surprised at DA's new interface... everything looks much brighter and cleaner, and possibly more customizable? Since I'm just posting from a friend's house at the moment, I don't have a whole lot of time to really check everything out.

So anyways, I'm really looking forward to spending the next couple of months in Texas, away from all the snow (in the past few days, we've gotten roughly a foot!). Yes, I won't have an easy time there by any means, due to what I'll be there for... but at least the weather will be nice.

I'll either have my computer sent to me, or just get a laptop or something (as my current PC is 7 years old) when I get to Monterey in April, and hopefully have enough free time to keep up with art and the goings-on on DA again in between studying and such.

To finish, I just thought of something fun to add:

For each of your characters, think of a theme song that would be appropriate for them. In other words, which song "sounds like the character."
HARD MODE: For those songs which have lyrics, the lyrical content must also fit the character, in tone and/or concept.

Richter Mitchell / Phobos: "April Fool" by Soul Asylum (it sounds a hell of a lot better on the album... but believe it or not, this was actually the highest quality version I could find online... :happycry: )
Heather Dawes / Enyo: "3 Minute Warning" by Warlock
Justin Mitchell / Deimos: "Heroes of Our Time" by Dragonforce :lol:
Amanda Owens / Nemesis: "Land of Immortals" by Rhapsody
Adrian Kadmon: "My Time" by Earshot (though, "Jesus Christ Pose" by Soundgarden would be a close second)
Trooper Blaze: "Nitro (Youth Energy)" by The Offspring

I could probably think of others, but my sister just called...

Anyways, later all!

EDIT: Now, with links for the songs! :D Some of them are louder than others... be warned when going from "My Time" which is very quiet (you'll have to crank the hell out of that one to hear it; surprising since it's the second-newest song in the list...) to "Jesus Christ Pose," which is as loud as I've ever heard on a YouTube video. ^^;

Haha, had to change the title since I already had a journal titled "OHSHI--"

So, I just realized I need to update my age on my profile, like two weeks ago...

I am now a quarter-century old. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

Also, I haven't updated for a long time (again). Was looking for a temporary or seasonal job for a while, but had no luck so then... got busybusybusy packing all of my stuff to move back in with my parents (it'll make things easier anyways when I prepare to go to Basic in February). So, between having little spare time, and so many things on my mind, I haven't even bothered with trying to draw anything new... got some ideas floating from SD versions of the Deities, to game sprites, to complete redesign of half of the characters, but just quick sketches are all I really have the concentration for at the moment. Nothing good enough to post, anyway. :happycry:

GRAAAHHHHHH TIME IS MOVING SO FAAAAAAAST!!!
